Inclement Weather

**The following email was sent by our Superintendent, Mr. Uselton.

Good morning!  Because we want everyone (our teachers, our staff members, our bus drivers, our parents, and our teenage drivers) to be safe as they travel to and from school every morning, decisions regarding school closures/delays must be based upon the most up-to-date road conditions and weather predictions. With inclement weather in the forecast for Friday, I want everyone to be informed about the decision-making process.  I have attached some frequently asked questions at the bottom of this email, and it is fine with me if you share this information with your friends and family.  I hope that you have a great day!  #TeamDCS

Cory Uselton

How is the decision made to cancel and/or delay the school day?

When inclement weather is predicted, the superintendent is in constant contact during the overnight hours (and in the days leading up to a predicted event) with the school district's transportation department, local law enforcement agencies, and local meteorologists before a decision is made.

When is the decision regarding a school closure/delay announced?

Because it is more convenient for everyone if an announcement is made on the night before a weather event, we prefer to make a decision before 10:30 p.m.  However, we often delay the decision until 5:30 a.m. because winter weather is so unpredictable and because the forecast often changes dramatically in the hours leading up to a winter weather event.

Will students and teachers have to attend extra days of school to “make-up” for inclement weather days?

School districts are required to “make-up” days for inclement weather, so everyone should always be prepared to “make up” days. However, there could be exceptions made if the Governor of Mississippi declares a “state of emergency” because of the inclement weather.

Where can official information about school closures and/or delays be found?

DeSoto County Schools will make an official announcement regarding closures and delays on our school district website,, on Memphis-area television stations, and through our school district’s parent notification system. Even though social media may be used to announce closures and/or delays, that is not an official announcement. There is often misinformation that is communicated via social media, and we ask that our stakeholders only trust the three official sources (the district website, Memphis-area television stations, and the district notification system).

If there are school closures, are school events also canceled?

Yes. If school is closed for the day, all school events are canceled for that entire day and evening. If school is dismissed early, all after-school events are canceled.
