READING WORKSHOP     Unit 4  Week 5  Analyzing Text Structure

Mentor text

Comprehension Focus:  Students explore elements of narrative text structure in fiction stories, including character, setting, plot, and conflict.  Students make sense of text by use of questioning.

Students discuss the use of first and third person points of view in stories.

Students read independently.

Comparing myths and reviewing skills for upcoming Case 21 testing in December.

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT FOCUSStudent work in a responsible way.

Students listen respectfully to the thinking of others and share their own.

Student build on one another's thinking during class discussions.

Students develop the skill of explaining their thinking.

VOCABULARY Words- Words to study are the following:

inspire, rickety, jittery, launch, intimidate, circulate, offer, rejoice, neglect, mysterious, enraged, compromise.  

Test:  Thursday, Nov. 16th.

SPELLING-Next spelling test will not be until Nov. 30th (Week #7)

The 3 options will be due that day as well.




During this four-week unit, students explore personal narratives, and write about significant topics and events from their lives.  They explore characteristics of a good personal narratie including sensory details, transitional words and phrases, engaging openings, and effective endings.  They learn abut the writing practices of professional authors as they hear, discuss, and write personal narraties.  Socially, thy ask one another quewstions about their writing to give feedback in helpful and respectful ways.  Students practice giving their full attention to th person who is speaking and expressing interest in and appreciation for other people's writing.

**I would LOVE for students to locate a special photograph that means something to them personally (ie: they have a story that could be written based on it.)  Please help them with this, and if it could be brought in by by Thursday, that would be great.  It can be a copy made on a copier, or I'd be happy to copy it for you.  I want this to go into their writer's notebook.  THANK YOU. :-)



Social Studies-We are working on a unit about the Native Americans of Mississippi. Students are creating a lapbook based on Powerpoints and notes given in class.  Social studies is also taught and assessed through the reading as well as by using the Scholastic News magazine.
